What did Paul Henry Spock say Europe needed in 1957?
He said Europe needed no commission, already having too many. What it needed was a man great enough to keep all the people in subjection to himself and lift them out of the economic bog into which they threatened to sink; they would accept such a man, be he a god or a devil.
Les explains that Time Magazine first quoted this gentleman in 1957. He identifies him as a famous World War II Belgian general who became a diplomat, named John, or Paul, Henry Spock. As one of Europe’s top leaders at that time, Spock said Europe did not need another commission because it already had too many. Instead, Europe needed a man great enough to keep all people in subjection to himself and to lift them out of the economic bog into which they threatened to sink. He said they would accept such a man whether he was a god or a devil. Les then notes that this was spoken by a European leader in 1957, and the world is now much more ready for such a man. He connects this to Paul’s writing about the coming world ruler in verse 4, who will oppose and exalt himself, just as Daniel said, worshiping the God of forces and exalting himself as God above all that is called God or worshiped, sitting in the temple of God that will be rebuilt in Jerusalem.
