What is the current status of the Law?
The Law has been blotted out, taken out of the way, and nailed to Christ’s cross. Because it was crucified with Him, it is now a dead system that has been done away with. Paul declares that believers have become dead to the Law, so returning to it is going back to weak and beggarly elements.
Les teaches that Colossians 2:13 describes the blotting out of the handwriting of ordinances that was against us and contrary to us. He says Christ took the Law, its demands, and legalism, jerked it away, and nailed it to His cross. As He hung there crucified for the sins of the world, the Law was crucified with Him. It is now a dead system, yet the human race constantly pulls it back out of the grave. Les compares this to fooling with something dead that is not pretty, and says that is how believers must feel about legalism. Paul is hammering home the question, Why go back to that weak and beggarly stuff that has been done away with? In Romans 7:4, believers are said to have become dead to the Law.
And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
