What is the nature of the Law?

The Law is fleshly, weak, and beggarly; it cannot make a person perfect or right with God. Scripture contrasts the works of the Law with faith, teaching that the Spirit is received not by Law-works but by the hearing of faith.

Les explains that the Law is a reference to the flesh, and that it was fleshly, weak, and beggarly. He points out that the Galatians had begun in the Spirit, but were being tempted to be made perfect, or right with God, by the flesh—which is the Law. The works of the Law cannot generate salvation or make one right with God. Instead, faith comes by hearing and taking God at His Word, and the Spirit is received by the hearing of faith, not by the works of the Law.
