What was the Law like?
The Law was fleshly, weak, and beggarly. It is tied to the works of the Law, not the hearing of faith, and it cannot perfect or make one right with God. The Spirit is received by faith, not by the works of the Law.
Les explains that the Law is a reference to the flesh, and he describes it as fleshly, weak, and beggarly. The Galatians had begun in the Spirit by faith, but they were being asked if they were now made perfect, or right with God, by the flesh—which is the Law. Scripture says it is by faith and not the works of the Law. Faith is taking God at His Word: God said it, we believe it, and God recognizes it, and on that basis He moves in and does everything that needs to be done. The Spirit is received by the hearing of faith, not by the works of the Law. Repetition is the mother of learning, so the argument is repeated.
Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?
