Did Adam and Eve go looking for God after they sinned, or did they hide?
They hid. When they heard the Lord God in the garden, they did not run to meet Him or seek Him; they hid themselves. God had to find them. This illustrates that mankind will never of his own volition go looking for God; God must make the first move.
Les explains that Adam and Eve sowed fig leaves, which may have worked for a few hours, but toward evening they heard the Lord God in the garden. They did not run to meet Him and say, 'Lord, You're the one we're looking for.' Instead, they hid, and God had to find them. Les emphasizes this has never changed: mankind will never of his own volition go looking for God; it is contrary to our makeup. God has to make the first move. He clarifies this does not mean extreme Calvinism, where God has already picked who He will save and who He won't. The work of the cross was sufficient for everybody. Using John 10's door to the sheepfold, Les notes the door is at ground level, not beyond anybody's reach, but it still has to begin with God.
And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
