Why did Adam and Eve hide from God?
Adam and Eve hid because sin had broken their fellowship with the Creator, and their own covering of fig leaves was inadequate. When confronted with the presence of the holy Creator God, they realized they were in no shape to meet Him, so they ran and hid among the trees.
Les explains that Adam and Eve had tried to deal with the physical problem by sewing fig leaves, but that could not restore the spiritual fellowship sin had broken. When they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, they suddenly realized those leaves would not cut it. They were in no shape to meet God, so they ran and hid among the trees. Les notes the human race has not changed, as John’s Gospel chapter 3 illustrates.
And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
