Why did Adam and Eve hide from God after they sinned?

After sinning, Adam and Eve realized their nakedness, sewed fig leaves, but those coverings failed when they heard the Lord approaching. Feeling unfit to meet their righteous Creator, they ran and hid. Their hiding shows sin's shame and the inadequacy of human effort to cover it before God.

Les explains that Adam and Eve sinned by partaking of the forbidden tree, and immediately saw their human nakedness. They sewed fig leaves, but when they heard the Lord coming down the path, those coverings fell into nothing. They ran and hid because, even with fig leaves, they were in no shape to meet their righteous Creator. God did not give up; He found them, called, 'Adam, where art thou?' and restored them—mercy and grace already evident in the Garden.
