Who is baptized into the body of Christ by the Spirit?

Every believer—Jew or Gentile, bond or free—is baptized by the one Spirit into the one body of Christ. This is not limited to the most spiritual, but includes all believers, who are totally engulfed in Christ and made to partake of the Holy Spirit’s work.

Les explains that the Greek word baptizō means to be totally engulfed, not necessarily by water. He illustrates this with Israel being baptized unto Moses, meaning they were totally engulfed in Moses’ leadership. In the same way, when a person is baptized into the body of Christ, they are totally engulfed, not just set on the edge. He emphasizes from 1 Corinthians 12:13 that by one Spirit all believers—every believer, not just the most spiritual—are baptized into the one body, whether Jew or Gentile, bond or free, and all are made to drink of the Holy Spirit’s work.

1 Corinthians 12:13

For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
