Les Feldick Bible Study

Why is Jesus able to sympathize with our weaknesses and temptations?

Scripture teaches that Jesus can sympathize with our weaknesses because He was tempted in all points just as we are, yet without falling into sin. He has already passed through every category of temptation common to humanity, so He is touched with the feeling of our infirmities.

Les explains that verse 15 says we do not have a high priest who cannot be touched; put positively, we have a high priest who can be touched with the feeling of our infirmities. He was tempted in all points like we are, but whereas we fall, He did not. Les connects this with I Corinthians 10:13, where Paul writes that no temptation has taken us but such as is common to man. No one can claim a unique temptation; Christ Himself has already gone through every category of temptation we face. Because He has experienced those common human temptations without falling, He can be touched with our infirmities.

Hebrews 4:15

For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
