What did God promise to do for Israel in Exodus 6:6?
God promised to bring the nation of Israel out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, to rid them out of Egyptian bondage, and to redeem them. He declared, 'I am Jehovah,' and said He would buy them back, paying the price to set them free from the bondage of Egypt.
Les explains that Exodus 6:6 is part of God's assurance to the children of Israel. God first reminds them of His covenant with Abraham to give them the land of Canaan, and He has heard their groaning under Egyptian bondage and remembered His covenant. In verse 6, God says, 'Wherefore, say unto the children of Israel, I am,' and identifies Himself as Jehovah. He promises, 'I will bring you, the nation of Israel, out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem.' Les emphasizes that this is the book of redemption: God says, 'I'm going to buy you back. I'm going to pay the price to set you free from the bondage of Egypt.' He also notes that Paul and other Scripture writers speak of our redemption.
