From which family was Jacob supposed to take a wife?
Isaac charged Jacob not to marry a Canaanite woman. Instead, he was to go to Padan Aram, to the house of Bethuel, his mother's father, and take a wife from the daughters of Laban, his mother's brother. This kept the family line within Rebekah's kin rather than the pagan Canaanites.
Les explains that Isaac was in full accord with the blessing, even though he recognized Jacob may have deceived him. Isaac charged Jacob, saying, "Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan." The Canaanites were pagan, idolatrous, and immoral, and Esau had already married two of them, which grieved Isaac and Rebekah. Instead, Jacob was to arise and go to Padan Aram, where Terah died, to the house of Bethuel his mother's father, and take a wife from the daughters of Laban his mother's brother. Les notes they married close-knit, keeping the race relatively pure and the gene pool able to handle it.
Arise, go to Padanaram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother’s father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban thy mother’s brother.
