Who begins and ends every covenant in Scripture?
Every covenant in Scripture begins and ends with God. He alone is the initiator and completer; men cannot touch it, enlarge on it, or subtract from it. Even though the Law was weak from humanity's standpoint, the covenant is confirmed by God and no man annuls or adds to it.
Les teaches that a covenant in Scripture is always a one-way street. Every covenant begins and ends with God, and men cannot touch it. They cannot enlarge on it, they cannot subtract from it. Paul uses the analogy of a man's covenant: if it is confirmed, no man disannulleth or addeth thereto. From the human standpoint, the Law was weak and beggarly and could not get the job done, but it was still perfect, holy, and righteous from God's side. Thus God alone is the author and finisher of every covenant.
Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man’s covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto.
