How far down did Jesus go in becoming a slave?

He went all the way down to the depths of being a slave, owning absolutely nothing of this world’s goods. From the exalted area of the Godhead, the Almighty God in the person of Christ became a slave, made in the likeness of men, and came down to be nothing more than a human being like the rest of us.

Les explains that the word servant is better understood as slave. In antiquity a slave had no material goods; his life was worthless, here today and gone tomorrow. He points to rowers in ships, slaves in the lower, hot areas who rowed until they died, and then were pitched overboard. They had none of this world’s goods. That is where the Lord Jesus took Himself: to the depths of being a slave, with absolutely nothing of this world’s goods to call His own. From the exalted area of the Godhead, He came down and became nothing more than a human being like the rest of us. Les says it is unbelievable from the human side and he cannot comprehend it, but it is what the Word declares: the Almighty God Himself in the person of Christ became a slave and was made in the likeness of men.

Philippians 2:7
