Why does God comfort us in our troubles?

God comforts believers in all their tribulation so that they may be able to encourage others who are in any trouble, using the same encouragement they themselves receive from God. This also demonstrates His sufficiency in trying times, enabling them to pass comfort on.

Les explains that Paul writes to the church at Corinth, addressing believers. In 2 Corinthians 1:4, the God of all comfort encourages us in all our tribulation so that we can encourage those in any trouble with the encouragement we ourselves receive from God. Les connects this to the question "Why do bad things happen to good people?" and suggests God can show us that He is sufficient. Even today, as we go through trying and testing times, we have the promise that God will be a constant encouragement. So the purpose is both to reveal God's sufficiency and to equip us to comfort others.

2 Corinthians 1:4

Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
