Who should desire the ability to speak forth God's Word?
Every believer should desire the ability to speak forth God's Word. In this passage, prophesying means not predicting the future but simply speaking and sharing God's Word. This desire applies whether speaking to believers needing teaching or to unbelievers still in darkness, asking the Lord for opportunity.
Les teaches from the chapter 14 opening that after pursuing love, believers should desire spiritual things, yet they are not to ask for a specific gift because that is up to the Holy Spirit to discern. Of all the things a believer should desire, Les says, prophesying is foremost. He clarifies that prophesy here is not telling the future as with Daniel or Isaiah, but simply speaking the Word of God and sharing it. Every believer should desire that ability, asking the Lord to use them, enhance what they are able to do, and give opportunity to speak forth the Word—whether to believers who need teaching or to unbelievers still in darkness.
Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
