How should believers live because of their position in Christ?
Because believers are in Christ and were baptized into His body, they are to walk in the Spirit. Walking according to that God-given position means they will not fulfill the desires of the flesh, identified as Old Adam, but will live in accord with the position Christ has given them.
Les explains that this position in Christ is doctrinal: when we became believers, we were baptized into the body of Christ, and that is now our position—we are in Christ. So walking in the Spirit is not about earning a position but living consistently with the position God has already given. If we walk according to that position, we will not give in to the demands of Old Adam, the flesh. Les illustrates position by comparing it to the presidency of a corporation or the United States: many people hold the office, but the position itself is recognized and always filled. In the same way, our position in Christ is real, and believers are to live in accord with it, just as people in important places are expected to live in accordance with their position.
