Why can a believer have perfect peace with God?

The believer's perfect peace with God rests on the work of the cross, which has settled everything. Salvation is not according to works but according to God's own purpose and grace, given in Christ Jesus before the world began. By faith the believer has access into this grace and rests on God's promises.

Les explains that Romans 5:2 speaks of peace with God, a peace that passeth all understanding. Many people lay their heads on the pillow at night and toss and turn because guilt runs roughshod over them; they know they are not at peace with God. But the believer can put his head on the pillow and be at perfect peace with his maker, knowing that the work of the cross has settled everything and that all these promises are true if we believe them and rest on them. Les also points to verse 9, which says God hath saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace, given us in Christ Jesus before the world began. We are not an accident in time but according to His divine and eternal purpose. This grace is entered by faith.
