What does it mean to be God's workmanship?
When God saves a person by faith, not by works, He does not leave them as a wreck. He creates them anew, gives a new personality, and makes them a new person. This workmanship is a created thing, accomplished through Christ's finished work and appropriated by faith.
Les explains that we are not saved by works, lest any man should boast. As a result of faith in the finished work of Christ accomplished on our behalf, God has imputed His righteousness to our account. But then God expects something: we are His workmanship. When God saves us, He does not leave us like a wreck; He makes us a new person and gives us a whole new personality, so we are not the old person we used to be. We are a created thing. Les also suggests, though he says he stands to be corrected, that the word workmanship may have the same Greek connection as symphony. He illustrates a symphony orchestra where various instruments meld together for a beautiful sound.
