Is the image of God in the body or in the inner part of man?
The image of God is in the inner, spiritual part of man, not in the physical body. The body is merely the temporary outer tent and the exercise of the five senses. God is Spirit and has no body with senses. Man's God-created image lies in the eternal personality—mind, will, and emotions—within the body, soul, and spirit.
Les explains that when God created man in His image, it does not mean God was in the form of a man or looked like a man, because the triune God is Spirit. The image is spiritual, eternal, and invisible—the personality. Les uses the circles to show Adam was a trichotomous being, a three-part being: body, soul, and spirit, as Thessalonians lays out. The body is the outer tent, temporary, for the exercise of the five senses. Inside that temporary tent are the eternal things, and it is there that we are made in the image of God, not in the body. God never had a body with the five senses to pattern us after, but He is personality comprised of mind, will, and emotions. So the image of God is in the inner man, in the mind, will, and emotions, not in the outer body.
