What part of a person is made in the image of God?

The part made in God’s image is the invisible, eternal, spiritual part of man—the personality, or true person, comprised of mind, will, and emotions. It is not the physical body, which is only the temporary outer tent exercised through the five senses.

Les explains that when Scripture says God created man in His image, it does not mean God was in the form of a man or that man physically resembles God. The triune God is Spirit, so the image must concern something spiritual and eternal, the invisible part of us even today: the personality. Adam was made a trichotomous being—body, soul, and spirit—as Thessalonians lays out. The body is merely the temporary outer tent, the covering for the five senses. Inside that tent are the eternal things, and it is in this area, not the body, that we are made in God’s image. God, as personality, is comprised of mind, will, and emotions, and Les identifies this as the personality or true person, in accord with Psychology 101.
