In Galatians 2:8, what did God do in Peter and Paul?

In Galatians 2:8, God wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the Jews, and the same God was mighty in Paul toward the Gentiles. This distinction shows God's different callings: God empowered Peter for Israel and Paul for the Gentiles.

Les explains that in Galatians 2:8 the "he" refers to God. God wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, meaning the Jews or Israel. The same God was mighty in Paul toward the Gentiles. Les notes that James, Peter, and John seemed to be pillars in Jerusalem, and when they perceived the grace given to Paul, they gave Paul and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship. This agreement meant Paul and Barnabas should go to the heathen, the Gentiles, while Peter, James, and John would go to the Jew. Thus God worked differently through Peter for Israel and through Paul for the Gentiles.
