What does Galatians 2:8 teach about God working in Peter and Paul?
Galatians 2:8 teaches that the same God who worked effectually in Peter for the apostleship of the circumcision, meaning Israel, also worked mightily in Paul toward the Gentiles. It shows one God empowering two distinct apostolic ministries: Peter to Jews and Paul to Gentiles.
Les explains that Galatians 2:7 first distinguishes the gospel of the uncircumcision, committed to Paul, from the gospel of the circumcision, committed to Peter. The circumcision means Jews in Scripture. Then verse 8 says the same God who wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision—Israel—was mighty in Paul toward the Gentiles. In verse 9, James, Peter, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace given to Paul; they gave Paul and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship. This was an agreement: Paul and Barnabas should go to the heathen/Gentiles, while Peter, James, and John would go to the Jew.
(For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:)
