What did the Lord say Paul was chosen to do in Acts 9:15?

In Acts 9:15, the Lord told Ananias that Paul was a chosen vessel unto Him, appointed to bear His name before the Gentiles. This calling meant Paul would carry the Lord's name to non-Jews, which was shocking to a Jew like Ananias because the word Gentile was anathema and could cause a riot.

Les explains that Ananias was fearful because Paul had authority from the chief priests to bind all who called on the Lord's name, and Ananias pictured himself in a dungeon under Jerusalem. Then the Lord answered, telling him to go, because Paul was a chosen vessel unto Him, to bear His name before the Gentiles. Les notes that this was something no one had heard of before, since the word Gentile was anathema to a Jew and merely saying it could cause a riot. The Lord was telling Ananias that He would send this man to the Gentiles, which was an astonishing thing to Ananias.
