Why did the Reformers fail to deal with end-time prophecy?
They were absorbed in salvation and faith and in correcting the excesses Roman Catholicism had brought in, so they never reached eschatology or end-time events. Augustine's Amillennialism had already transferred Israel's promises to the Church, leaving no prophecy to fulfill.
Les explains that when Israel was taken off the scene, prophecy was blown out of the water; end-time references were removed because Israel was considered no longer viable. Augustine then precipitated Amillennialism, teaching that all promises given to Israel now belonged to the Church and that no prophecy remained to fulfill. Augustine even held that the Church is the literal Kingdom and that Satan was defeated and locked up at the Crucifixion and Resurrection. When the Reformers—Martin Luther, Calvin, and the rest—came along, they were so caught up in salvation and faith and in doing away with the excesses Roman Catholicism had brought in that they never even considered eschatology or end-time events.
