What will happen to the end-times Babylon?

The end-times Babylon—the worldwide system of economy, politics, and religion—will come under God’s wrath and be suddenly and totally destroyed. Scripture says, “Babylon is suddenly fallen, and destroyed,” while people seek balm for her pain, if perhaps she may be healed.

Les explains that Jeremiah 51:8 may contain both a near and a far fulfillment. Historically, the Medes and Persians gained entrance under the walls of ancient Babylon by drying up and diverting the Euphrates River, and they went in on the dry river bed. Suddenly the city of Babylon was destroyed and fell almost overnight. But Les also takes the long-term view: the Babylon of the end-time ages is the whole worldwide system of economy, politics, and religion. It too will come under the wrath of God and be suddenly and totally destroyed. The verse’s reference to taking balm for her pain, if perhaps she may be healed, underscores that her destruction is fatal.

Jeremiah 51:8

Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed: howl for her; take balm for her pain, if so be she may be healed.
