Will the ancient city of Babylon be rebuilt in the end times?

The ancient city of Babylon will not be rebuilt in the end times; once destroyed it becomes a habitation of wild beasts. The end-time Babylon is distinguished from the ancient city and likely represents the present-day world system, not a literal rebuilt Babylon.

Les explains that he does not believe the ancient city of Babylon will be rebuilt and become the center of end-time activity. He acknowledges that some theologians and Bible teachers hold that view, but he disagrees, saying Scripture meant what it said: once Babylon was destroyed it would become nothing but a habitation of wild beasts. He cites Jeremiah 51:7, where Babylon is described as a golden cup in the LORD's hand that made all the earth drunken, and clarifies that 'whole earth' referred to the then-known civilized world. He also mentions that Sodom Hussein, the leader of Iraq, had grandiose schemes to rebuild ancient Babylon south of Baghdad and spent great sums, but it is not going and tourists are not going to it. Les concludes he cannot envision the ancient city being rebuilt, though he admits he may be wrong. He distinguishes ancient Babylon from the present-day world system Babylon, seeing them as not one and the same.
