What is the power of the scorpion-tailed locusts in Revelation 9?
The scorpion-tailed locusts have tails like scorpions with stings, and their power is to hurt men for five months per sting. They are so numerous and huge that the sound of their wings is like many chariots. They have a king over them, the angel of the bottomless pit, Abaddon or Apollyon, meaning destroyer.
Les explains that these locusts are like Middle Eastern swarms that can cloud out the sun and roar as they come, but these are far worse. They are so numerous and huge that the sound of their wings is like many chariots. Verse 10 gives them the ability to sting like a scorpion: they have tails like scorpions with stings in their tails, and their power is to hurt men five months per sting. Les says this is beyond our comprehension. Verse 11 says they have a king over them, the angel of the bottomless pit, whose Hebrew name is Abaddon and Greek name is Apollyon, meaning the destroyer. Les is quite sure this angel is not Satan, but probably one of Satan's cohorts or lieutenants. This is the first woe, with two more to come.
And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.
