Why do some people think God would not send anyone to an eternal hell?

Many people emphasize that God is a God of love and grace, so they reason He could not possibly devise an eternal hell or lake of fire. They overlook that Scripture also presents Him as a God of judgment and wrath once His grace ends.

Les explains that a lot of people say, “Wait a minute, God’s a God of love.” He has been, and He still is today. But once this day comes, His grace ends and He becomes a God of judgment, a God of wrath. Les says we have to overcome this theology that God is just a God of love. He points to Psalms chapter 2 and notes that this is another reason many seem to think He could not possibly dream up something like an eternal hell or the lake of fire, because after all, He’s a God of love—how could He? But Les qualifies that He was a God of love when He sent Christ to the cross, and He has loved the human race ever since, pouring out His grace upon humanity. Yet humanity has walked it underfoot.
