What happened whenever Israel became disobedient?

They went down, down, down, hit bottom, and then realized they needed the God of Abraham. Their prosperity was always based on spiritual obedience; obedience brought blessing and ascent, while disobedience brought decline. Then He would bring them back up.

Les explains that Israel's prosperity was always based on their spiritual obedience, which was typical of all Israel's history. When they were obedient to the Word of God, they were blessed and ascended among the nations of the Middle East, bringing David's kingdom and Solomon to their height. But as soon as Israel became disobedient, they went down, down, down, hit bottom, and suddenly realized they needed the God of Abraham; then He would bring them back up. Les also notes that up to a point this is valid today, because God will not bless a believer in total disobedience and rebellion. Yet the analogy is that if we are obedient, we can expect God's blessings, though not necessarily always in the material.
