What does Isaiah 52:14 prophesy about Christ's appearance?

Isaiah 52:14 prophesies that Christ's visage, or appearance, would be so marred more than any man, and His form more marred than the sons of men. This marring occurred before the cross through scourgings, a crown of thorns, and a beard ripped out with flesh.

Les explains that Isaiah 52:14 is a prophecy concerning Christ. Reading from Isaiah 52, beginning at verse 13, he highlights the words "his visage," meaning His appearance, and "his form," saying they were marred more than any man and more than the sons of men. Les then asks what Christ went through before He even went to the cross: the scourgings that made a man's back like hamburger, the crown of thorns pushed on His head, and His beard ripped out, which takes flesh with it. He concludes that Christ hung on the cross, and the last picture Mary had of Him was that—it was awful. This sets up John's Gospel, where Mary sees Him afterward and, not recognizing Him, thinks He is the gardener until Jesus says, "Mary."
