Why does Isaiah 59:21 look at eternity?
The covenant in Isaiah 59:21 promises that God's Spirit and His words will not depart from Israel's mouth, nor from their seed, nor their seed's seed, from henceforth and forever. That 'forever' language shows the promise extends beyond time into eternity.
Les teaches that Isaiah 59:20 first presents the Redeemer coming to Zion and to those in Jacob who turn from transgression. Verse 21 then records God's covenant with them: His Spirit upon them and His words in their mouth will not depart from their mouth, nor from their seed, nor their seed's seed, from henceforth and forever. Les explains that this wording already looks at eternity because the promise is not limited to a generation but continues forever. Chapter 60 then addresses Israel as the nation whose light has come, with the Lord's glory rising upon her and Gentiles coming to her light.
As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the LORD, from henceforth and for ever.
