What is Zion in Isaiah 59:20?

In Isaiah 59:20, Zion is identified as Jerusalem. The verse states the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob. Jacob is associated with the nation of Israel, so Zion here points to Jerusalem as the place the Redeemer comes to.

Les teaches that Isaiah 59:20 says, “And the Redeemer, capitalized, shall come to Zion,” and he immediately identifies Zion as Jerusalem. The verse continues, “and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob.” Les then asks who Jacob is associated with and answers that it is the nation of Israel. So in this passage, Zion is Jerusalem, the city connected with Israel, where the Redeemer comes to those who turn from transgression in Jacob.

Isaiah 59:20

And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD.
