What are the three components of the soul?

The soul consists of three components: the mind, the will, and the emotion. These are invisible entities, and together they form a trinity of sorts within man's soul, distinct from the spirit, as Hebrews 4:12 indicates when it speaks of dividing soul and spirit.

Les teaches that man was created in the image of God, not primarily in physical appearance, but in the invisible realm of the soul and spirit. He explains that in the area of man's soul we become a trinity of sorts, made up of the mind, the will, and the emotion. These three are definite entities. The mind is invisible—you can dissect the brain and study brain cells, but no one can put the mind on a table and examine it. The will is also a definite entity; you came by exercise of the will. Les connects this to Hebrews 4:12, where the Word of God is alive and powerful, sharper than a two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Thus Scripture distinguishes soul from spirit while describing the soul's components.
