Why did God go out into the Garden after Adam and Eve sinned?

God went into the Garden to show that Adam and Eve were now separated from Him by sin, not because He did not know where they were. Before sin, they were His and fellowshiped with Him daily; after sin, He could not fellowship with them, so He asked, “Where art thou?”

Les explains that redemption is not a Pauline invention; it comes all the way up from the Garden of Eden. When God placed Adam and Eve in the Garden, they were His and fellowshiped with Him every day. But sin came in, and He lost them, because He could not fellowship with them in their sin. Les suggests God had to go out into the Garden, not because He did not know where they were, but to show that they were now so separated from Him. The first question He asked was “Where art thou?” He never had to ask that before, but once sin had separated them and He had lost them, He could ask it. Adam should have answered, “We’re lost.”
