Does my salvation depend on how much I love Jesus?
No. Salvation does not depend on how much you love Jesus, but on how much He loved you—enough to die and suffer for you. Believers receive no spirit of bondage to fear; the Holy Spirit bears witness with their spirit that they are children of God.
Les explains that verse 15 tells believers they have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear. Believers don't have to walk around in constant fear; they respect and revere God but don't fear Him because they know He loves them. He recalls a pastor's sermon pointing to John chapter 13, where Jesus dealt with Martha, Mary, and Lazarus: it wasn't how much Lazarus and Mary loved Jesus, but how much He loved them. Salvation isn't dependent on how much I love Him, although we certainly will love Him; the important thing is realizing how much He loved us, enough to die and suffer for us. When we have that kind of salvation, the Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God. That contradicts the idea that you can never really know; Scripture makes it plain we can know we have passed from death unto life, and the Holy Spirit witnesses that we have salvation.
