Is salvation dependent on how much I love God or how much He loves me?

Salvation is not dependent on how much we love God, but on how much He loves us. He loved us enough to die and suffer for us. Believers need not live in constant fear, because they know He loves them, and the Holy Spirit witnesses that they are children of God.

Les explains that salvation does not rest on the intensity of our love for Him, although believers will certainly love Him. He points to John chapter 13, where Jesus dealt with Martha, Mary, and Lazarus: the important thing was not how much they loved Jesus, but how much He loved them. That was an eye-opener. Les says this is what people must realize—that He loved us enough to die for us and suffer for us. Because of that salvation, the Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God. Believers have not received a spirit of bondage to fear; they revere God but do not have to walk in constant fear, knowing He loves them. This contradicts those who say you can never really know, for Scripture makes it plain that we can know we have passed from death unto life.
