What did John do when he arrived at Jesus' empty tomb?

John ran to the empty sepulcher with Peter, came first to the tomb, went in, saw, and believed. As yet, however, they knew not the Scripture that He must rise again from the dead, so their belief came before full understanding.

After Mary Magdalene told them the tomb was empty, Peter and John ran to the sepulcher. John, the other disciple, came first to the tomb, went in, saw, and believed. Yet the next verse explains that as yet they knew not the Scripture that He must rise again from the dead. Jesus had told them plainly, but it was hid from them; God kept it secret. They had no idea He was going to die and rise, and everyone was shocked by the empty tomb.

John 20:8

Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.
