How much physical suffering did the twelve disciples endure before they were martyred?

As far as the supplied context reveals, the twelve disciples endured no physical suffering before they were martyred, certainly not during His earthly ministry. They were all martyred, and that is not minimized, but the passage attributes no such suffering to them. The contrast is with another man who suffered continually for twenty years.

Les explains that as far as we know, the twelve disciples went through no physical suffering until they were finally martyred, certainly not during His earthly ministry. He notes they were all martyred and he takes nothing away from that. But he contrasts them with this man, whose twenty years of ministry was one beating after another, one imprisonment after another, and constant opposition from his own countrymen, the Jews. That man suffered only for the sake of the Gospel, while the twelve did not have to do that; he says he was in prison more frequent and in deaths more frequent.
