How much did the apostle Paul actually suffer for the Gospel?

Paul suffered extensively for the Gospel: he was imprisoned often, shipwrecked twice, received thirty-nine lashes three times, and was hungry, naked, and beaten. Yet he said these present sufferings are not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed to believers.

Les explains that when Paul speaks of the sufferings of this present time, he knew suffering firsthand. Paul had been in prison often, was shipwrecked twice, received thirty-nine lashes three times, and was hungry, naked, and beaten—all for the sake of the Gospel. He suffered greatly. Yet even with all those hardships, Paul said it was nothing compared with the glory waiting to be revealed. Les notes that in America believers know very little of suffering, though it could happen someday; nothing is impossible. All creation waits with earnest expectation for the manifestation of the children of God.
