What has most of Christendom today forgotten about the cross?
Much of Christendom today has forgotten the power of the work of the cross, the Christ of Calvary, His shed blood, and the power of His resurrection. Many know about Jesus, Christmas, and Easter but not Christ crucified, which Paul preached as God's power to those being saved.
Les explains that the people in view knew only the Jesus of earthly ministry and nothing of the Christ of Calvary, the shed blood, or the power of His resurrection. He says they are not alone: this is most of Christendom, which knows all about Jesus, Christmas, and Easter, yet the power of the work of the cross has been long forgotten. Against preaching another Jesus or another gospel, Paul recalled 1 Corinthians 1:18—Christ crucified is the power of God to those saved and foolishness to the lost. Les also notes Paul's defense that he was not a whit behind the chiefest apostles, meaning Peter.
