What does 'ungodly' mean in the Bible?

In Scripture, 'ungodly' means without God—the prefix 'un' meaning without. It describes someone who is without God in their life, not necessarily morally awful or on skid row. Such a person may be a good citizen or morally upright, yet remains an unbeliever, without faith, and therefore cannot please God.

Les explains that the word ungodly is often misunderstood. He defines it by taking the first two letters, 'un,' and setting them aside; 'un' always means without. So an ungodly person is simply someone who is without God in their life. They may be a prime example of citizenship, and morally they may be better than many Christians could ever hope to be, but they are still without God. Paul calls them unbelievers, but that does not mean they are the pits. They are without faith, and without faith it is impossible to please God.
