What does the Bible mean by the word 'ungodly'?
The word 'ungodly' means being without God. The prefix 'un-' means without, so ungodly people are those without God in their lives. They may be good, moral, even church members, but if they have never experienced God's saving grace, they remain ungodly.
Les explains that the word 'ungodly' does not necessarily mean people are down on skid row or have come to the end of themselves. The prefix 'un-' simply means 'without,' so the ungodly are without God. They may be good people, the epitome of society, or even the best of church members, but if they have never experienced God's saving grace, they are ungodly because they are without God in their lives. He illustrates this with Israel at the Red Sea: they were locked in, without strength, and did not know what to do. Instead of building bridges or finding a boat, God said, 'Stand still, and wait for the power of God.' Similarly, before salvation we were without strength, without hope, helpless, and there was nothing we could do; then God opened the way through His grace. In due time, Christ died for the ungodly—those without God. Les notes that God saves the down and outer, the up and outer, and everything in between.
