Can morally good or religious people still be ungodly?
The term ungodly means without God, not necessarily morally corrupt or on skid row. A person may be good, an upstanding member of society, or even the best of church members, yet if they have never experienced God's saving grace, they remain ungodly because they are without God.
Les explains that the word ungodly does not necessarily mean someone has to be down on skid row or has come to the end of themselves. The prefix “un-” simply means “without,” so the ungodly are people without God. They may be good people, the very epitome of society, or the best of church members, but if they have never experienced God’s saving grace, they are ungodly because they are without God in their lives. Like Israel trapped at the Red Sea, we were without strength, without hope, helpless, and unable to save ourselves. God opens the way through His grace, and in due time Christ died for the ungodly—those without God. Les notes that God saves the down-and-outer, the up-and-outer, and everything in between.
