Why does Jesus condemn the Laodicean church?

Jesus condemns the Laodicean church because it claimed to be rich, increased with goods, and in need of nothing materially, yet was actually wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked. Its material wealth masked spiritual deadness, a condition the Lord exposed as ignorance of its true state.

Les teaches from Revelation 3:17 that Jesus condemns the Laodicean church because they said, "I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing" materially, yet did not know they were wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked. He notes this describes most of Christendom: wealthy congregations with huge sanctuaries, fellowship halls, gymnasiums, swimming pools, and tennis courts, but spiritually dead. By contrast, the apostle Paul came from that wealth and high religious experience and for the gospel's sake became poor as a church mouse.

Revelation 3:17

Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
