Les Feldick Bible Study

What happens to a believer's soul and spirit at the moment of death?

At the moment a believer dies, the soul and spirit leave the body and go immediately into the presence of the Lord. Scripture does not reveal their exact activity or state there; they are in the Lord’s presence, waiting for the great Resurrection Day. Because eternity has no time, that waiting will not seem long.

Les explains that as soon as a believer dies—the second they pass off the scene—their soul and spirit leave the body and go immediately into the Lord’s presence. He notes that the Bible is fairly silent about their specific activity and state at that point. What is clear is that they are in the Lord’s presence, waiting for the great Resurrection Day, which he connects to I Corinthians chapter 5. Les also reminds us that in eternity there is no time, so even someone dead for 6,000 years will not experience the wait as long; the reunion will be as if only hours had passed. He illustrates this with taking a loved one to the train depot: the loved one boards a front car, the train pulls out, and after quickly buying a ticket you board a car at the end of the train.
