What happens to a believer's soul and spirit when the body is placed in the grave?
When a believer's body is placed in the grave, the soul and spirit are absent from the body and present with the Lord. At the resurrection, God brings those departed souls and spirits of believers from heaven to the atmosphere, where they are reunited with the resurrected body.

Paul teaches that so far as the soul and spirit are concerned, absent from the body is present with the Lord. At the Lord's coming, God will bring the departed souls and spirits of believers only from heaven down to the atmosphere. Then the dead in Christ shall rise first, being brought out of the tomb and reunited with their soul and spirit.
