What is the matter with Christianity today according to this teaching?
According to this teaching, the matter with Christianity today is unbelief. People cannot bring themselves to say they believe what God says. The intellectual world, with its education and intelligence, ridicules Scripture, prompting man to question, 'How can I believe this?' That is unbelief, which reaches the very heart of God.
Les explains that Hebrews chapter 4, by Paul's inspiration, refers to Israel's forty years wasted in the wilderness. They could have entered the land of promise but did not because of unbelief, not immorality, though they were guilty of much. Les says this is so appropriate for us today. What's the matter with Christianity tonight? Unbelief. People just cannot break down and say, 'Yeah, I believe what God says.' The intellectual world, with all its intelligence and education, poo-poos the Scripture, so man asks, 'How can I believe this?' That is unbelief, and it gets to the very heart of God. Les then returns to Exodus, where God is preparing the nation of Israel.
