Les Feldick Bible Study

Do other animals besides chickens have a pecking order?

Yes. The pecking order applies to most livestock, not just chickens. Agricultural college researchers first observed it in chickens, but cattle and other animals also immediately establish a pecking order when grouped together, with the lowest never competing with the top.

Les teaches that the term "pecking order" was coined years ago by agricultural college researchers who were watching chickens. They noticed that in every flock, small or large, the chickens immediately set up a pecking order. He says he has watched it and that it is true in most livestock, whether cattle or whatever. When a bunch of them are put together, they establish their pecking order, and the one at the bottom will never try to compete with the one at the top. He then applies this same principle to human behavior, noting that an abusive father or husband establishes a pecking order, abusing his wife, who in turn turns on the children.
