What conditional promise did God make to Israel in Exodus 19:5?

In Exodus 19:5 God promised Israel that if they would obey His voice indeed and keep His covenant, then they would be a peculiar or particular treasure unto Him above all people. The promise was conditional, preserving human free will, and God affirmed His sovereignty, saying all the earth is His.

Les explains that Israel had just come out of Egypt and was gathered around Mount Sinai while Moses was up in Mount Sinai and God was speaking to him. God's statement in Exodus 19:5 is conditional: "if you will obey my voice indeed and keep my covenant, then you shall be a peculiar or particular treasure unto me above all people." Les points out the word "if" means it is conditional, and God never takes away the free will of men or nations. This promise would elevate Israel above all other nations, a position that would not change until the dispersions, and then God will bring them back and finish the end-time scenario when Israel will once again be the head of the nations. God can say this because He is sovereign, and all the earth is His.

Exodus 19:5
