What did Moses do to the rock at Horeb to get water?

At Horeb (also called Mount Sinai), Moses smote the rock with his rod, as God had instructed. God stood before him upon the rock, and when Moses struck it, water flowed out so that the people and their livestock could drink.

Les explains that Horeb and Mount Sinai are the same place. God told Moses He would stand before him on the rock in Horeb, and Moses was to smite or strike the rock with his rod. When he did, water came out so the people could drink, and there was plenty for all their livestock—a veritable river flowing through the desert. Les also notes that whenever the word 'rock' is used symbolically in Scripture, it refers to Jesus Christ, as seen in 1 Corinthians 10.

Exodus 17:6

Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
